Killing Joke - Hosannas From The Basement Of Hell

So now it's time for the follow up, have they managed to better themselves again? Not really. There aren't nearly as many impressive songs present here as their last record. Generally they seem to have abandoned the lack of continuity between songs for a more operatic, all consuming epic feel and thus generally making the whole album seem as one. The guitar is still so amazingly produced that it's the stand out point in nearly every song but due to a more instrumental vibe, old made eyes' vocals which were such a driving force before seem to have taken a backseat. However, better than the last one or not, this is still likely to be the metal record of the year, unless Slayer, Isis or Converge can really pull something special out, Killing Joke have proved that they're basically the best metal band going.

Agreed completely.
My 3 favorite albums of KJ are probably the "heaviest": Extremities...., KJ 2003, and Hosannas. Like a good wine, they just get better with age.
Maybe it's just me, but really I never need to hear Wardance, Requiem or Pssyche again at a concert. I mean, c'mon, we've all heard them 25000 times on our CD players & in concert. You go to a show to hear new stuff, and more recent stuff.... sorry for the rant but the 2003 tour was brand-new stuff and dinosaur old stuff... no Extremities, only one or 2 from Pandemonium, nothing from Democracy..
Anyway I really like the new album & my faves are the sludgey "Gratitude", the driving opening song "This Tribal Antidote" and "Hosannas...". One other note: one of the most powerful songs on "Extremities" is "Intravenous".... seeing it live was amazing. But anyways, "Majestic" has the same intense driving, escalating feel to it, in a good way (i.e. not saying it is a dupe, but rather an extension & variation of it.)
Anyway thanks for covering the album. This one, Isis' "Oceanic Remixes" and Fields of the Nephilim's "Mourning Sun" seem to be dominating my music selection right now.
P.S. I'll never understand how "heavy" bands like Tool, Disturbed, Korn, etc... (many of which I really like) enjoy such broad commercial success, but KJ - an influence to ALL of them -- has never reaped such spoils. I guess in a selfish way I'm glad (there is always something deflating about seeing a little brat or spoiled yuppie listening to the same music you like) but still....
